"I find a place, a microcosm, an extract of the greater universe. This place has a space, a time, a history. This place has a name which implies a function that it has long since lost. My emotional truth meets up with the one that this place exudes. Convergence. I photograph objects, rooms in section, search for traces that refer to time, gather details. With a lurching camera I work myself from the exterior to the interior. The essence of things changes with my own perceptions. If I can succeed in observing these things as if I had never seen them before, as if I were unaware of their functions, I can avoid the danger of reducing them to simply those.  I observe things as if the visible were purely imaginary, as if something lies beneath that remains to be identified."
